world's most brutal dictators, kim jong-un. the president said he'll know in the first minute if kim jong-un is serious. in stark contrast to the dictator who tested more bombs and missiles than his father and grandfather taking a selfie. a sight seeing walk surrounded by body guards. it was not a while kim celebrating his missile blasts. is he truly ready to give all that up. jonathan karl leading us off. >> reporter: this is donald trump's moment. even for this showman president, no move has been bolder, riskier. no spotlight more bright, more intense. at lunch with singapore's prime minister, he sounded confident, but restrained. >> i think things could work out very nicely. >> reporter: "great to be in singapore," he tweeted. diplomats at the embassy here, a pep talk. >> you are spectacular people. thank you very much. >> reporter: even more, this is kim jong-un's moment. will this 36year-old dictator make an historic turn? he spent the eve of the talks sightseeing. even this night on the town for the world's most isolated leader of the world's most isolated nation is without precedent. srrounded by a phalanx of bodyguards, the same well-dressed security force earlier seen jogging alongside his car. not since taking power seven years ago has he ventured so far from home. he visited singapore's garden by the bay, smiled as the foreign minister snapped a selfie. his next stop, a casino resort waving at stunned tourists as he made his way. the government of singapore is picking up his hotel tab. kim telling the prime minister, "if the summit proves

successful, the name of singapore will go down in history." president trump said he would know instantly if kim is serious about making a deal. >> i think within the first minute i'll know. >> how? >> just my touch, my feel. that's what i do. i think i'll know pretty quickly whether or not something positive will happen. >> reporter: the two men spent most of last year trading insults, an ominous words of war. >> rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime. >> reporter: kim jong-un posing more and more of a dire threat. testing missiles capable of hitting the u.s., and a hydrogen bomb some 10 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on hiroshima. what will happen? diplomats have been working day and night on a joint statement. in reality the answer depends on two men who relish their own

wrong. >> before the summit even happens jon karl leading us off. in the meantime many say one of the victories of kim jong-un is simply standing on the same stage as the president of the united states. he'll get that chance after taking over in his mid twenties and killing his uncle and believed killing his brother with a nerve agent. who is the man about to sit across from president trump? >> reporter: he is the 34-year-old leader of north korea. kim jong-un. his official birth date has never been confirmed. known for his dress, right down to his platform shoes, and his pursuit of nuclear weapons. when his father died of a heart attack at 70 from what the north koreans said was over work. it was his youngest son kim

jong-un who would take over. just last september he tested what was believed to be a hydrogen bomb. known to the north koreans as the supreme leader the world got its first of kim jong-un at his father's funeral in 2011. he was one of the pallbearers walking alongside with father's casket, crying at his father's wake. as north korea's leader he has demonstrated he's willing to kill to keep his power. publicly executing his own uncle. he feared he was planning a coupe. even his older half-brother, once believed to be the original heir to the kim dynasty.

surveillance footage show two women smearing a deadly nerve agent on his face here, asking for help in the moments after. he was dead within minutes. it's thought he has killed more than 140 senior officials to keep his grip on power. the north korean people have struggled with little food and black outs. this satellite image showing a dark nation when the sun goes down. that brutality reaching americans, too. 22-year-old american student otto warmbier was on a guided tour trip when he was accused of stealing a propaganda poster at his hotel in 2016. >> please! i've made the worst mistake of my life. >> reporter: sentenced to 15 years hard labor, he served 18 months before being released back to the u.s. in a coma, eventually dying from unexplained injuries. his parents are still demanding answers. obedience drilled into north koreans at a young age. they are taught songs praising their leader. propaganda everywhere. the military parades. the uniform marching.

defectors tell stories of starvation and labor camps. this video a north korean soldier trying to defect, surviving a hail of bullets as he crossed the border. he went to school in switzerland for a time. he enjoyed western culture -- movies and basketball. he is married and believed he has three children. his wife is more of a public figure in north korea. she is called respected first lady. just this year kim jong-un and his unexpected olive branch south korea. now he is set to walk up to president trump for that face-to-face meeting being watched by the world.

the north korean dictator set to sit down with president trump a short time from now. we're learning more about kim jong-un's younger sister. she arrived in singapore on a separate plane for security reasons. this maybes it clear that sister is a close adviser. as we said anticipation has been building around the world for weeks. not in north korea. the state department releasing nothing about the meeting. the state newspaper reporting on their dear leader's meeting with the president. bob woodruff monitoring the action on the korean peninsula tonight. >> reporter: she's a familiar sight to north koreans, but the news unexpected. the famed north korean newsreader broadcasting these carefully selected images of kim jong-un.

waving, getting on that plane to singapore, where he met the prime minister. people stopping to watch. the same images covering the state newspaper. until now, most in this isolated kingdom only aware their supreme leader planned to meet with the u.s. president, but not when or where. now north korean state tv reporting the leaders will discuss a new relationship between their nations, even bringing up the future possibility of a denuclearized korean peninsula. there is cautious optimism, this man is >> who can trust trump and kim jong-un? nobody can. >> you don't trust either of them? >> just hope. >> just hope. >> reporter: trump and south korea's president speaking over the phone ahead of the summit. the people on this peninsula waiting for the results of the historic talks. david. >> bob, our thanks to you.

at the same time president trump is on a mission of peace, he's attacking america's closest allies. singly out just justin trudeau and taking on the g 6 countries for deals on trade. here's abc's chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz. >> reporter: even as he was preparing to sit down with america's fiercest foe, president trump launched a new volley of attacks on our closest allies. "sorry, we cannot let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade anymore," he tweeted. barely 48 hours ago the president was touting his ties to the g7 countries. >> angela and emmanuel and justin, i would say the

relationship is a ten. >> reporter: but things quickly turned dark, trump refusing to budge on his plans to impose stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel from canada and other allies. canadian prime minister justin trudeau vowing to retaliate with tariffs on american goods. >> canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around. >> reporter: the president went ballistic, calling trudeau "dishonest and weak," refusing to sign the traditional g7 statement of solidarity. his advisors going even further. >> there's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with president donald j. trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door. >> reporter: they accused trudeau of trying to undermine the north korea summit. >> the president is not going to let a canadian prime minister push him around. kim must not see american weakness. >> reporter: from canada, a measured response. >> canada does not believe that

midnight when officers responded to a domestic dispute, a woman accusing her boyfriend of hitting her. >> i heard shots, gunshots -- bop, bop, bop, bop. >> patient will be the officer. >> at some point there was an exchange of gunfire where one officer was shot. it is a very serious, significant injury. >> reporter: police say the suspect, 35-year-old gary lindsey, jr., seen here in a previous booking photo, then barricaded himself inside this home with four children inside ranging in age from eleven to a 1-year-old. >> reporter: police believe two of the children are his, the other two are his girlfriend's. >> it's a bunch of kids and it's really worrying, something that i really didn't imagine could happen here. >> reporter: david, the suspect has a lengthy criminal history. he's a convicted felon and had been arrested for domestic violence and arson. david? >> gio, thank you. when we come back the cabin

was killed when a large tree came crashing down, smashing her car as she was driving by. good afternoon, thank you for joining us. >> this happened during the morning commute on 680 north.th. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has been following the story and joins us live. >> reporter: hi, larry. this did happen during the morning commute but the tree hit just one car. unfortunately for that driver, the result was catastrophic. the accident happened in an instant, proving to be the worst of luck for the driver of this silver mercedes. 58-year-old ludmila was driving northbound on interstate 680 in danville just as deae tr o t was possibly a tree down and it appears there was one vehicle involved with the tree, unknown

at this time whether the vehicle collided with the tree or if the tree landed on the vehicle. >> reporter: the car was heavily damaged and she was pronounced dead at the scene. the tree, approximately 70 feet tall, was clearly dead, perched just 20 yards up on the hillside above the freeway just north of the el pintado onramp. it's property owned by caltrans. with traffic backed up for miles, caltrans crews worked to clear the tree from the roadway. at the same time, the chp conducted its investigation where the car ended up, about 1/8 of a mile beyond the tree. it all happened during the morning rush hour. >> it could have been worse. it was during commute time, so thankfully there was only one vehicle involved. and for the chp, you know, we offer our condolences to the family, because this is a -- this is a terrible time. so hopefully we can figure out what happened for them. >> reporter: now, caltrans did confirm this morning that the tree was on their property. we've reached out to
